Canyon
Lake Creek Community Forest,
Interpretive Site Manual and Trail Brochure
Client: Whatcom Land Trust Whatcom County,
WA
Site: Canyon Lake Creek Community Forest owned
by Whatcom Land Trust and managed by Whatcom County Parks, is
located in the Cascade foothills east of Bellingham, WA. The
Forest’s 2300-acres include 700-acres of rare mid-elevation
old growth forest.
Issue: The Land Trust acquired Canyon Lake
Creek Community Forest to protect the oldest old growth forest
in the state – 1000 year old Alaska yellow-cedar trees
– but needed to allow managed public access.
Solution: Grant monies were obtained to develop
an Interpretive Manual specific to the site for guides, program
leaders, community groups and land stewards and a Trail Brochure
to interpret the site for the general public.
Role: Goals, objectives and themes were developed
that helped guide the partners in defining their needs for the
project. Resource materials and information were gathered from
wide ranging sources. Program Scripts, an Interpretive Resource
Manual and a Trail Brochure were developed. A foundation was
laid for development of a future land steward program.
